Rhododendrons ~ Presented by Mike Stewart

Image

There is tremendous diversity within the genus Rhododendron.  This workshop is an opportunity to explore the range of structure, size, and leaf forms that rhododendrons offer.  The Pacific Northwest is a perfect environment to grow most of the species and hybrids that will enhance your garden.  Come see a selection of unique, exotic, and new introductions.  Mike will bring rhododendrons from his nursery for sale.

Mike Stewart is a rhododendron expert.  Along with his wife Maria, he owns Dover Nursery which is known for its outstanding selection of rhododendrons, both species and hybrids.  He has been honored with the Gold Medal from the American Rhododendron Society (ARS) – their highest award.  He is also a popular speaker who shares his professional knowledge with the gardening public.  Mike is very active with the ARS, having been a recent International ARS president.  There are those who say that he never knows when to say “no” in the service of rhododendrons and so he is now the Vice President of the Rhododendron Species Foundation.  Dover Nursery, in Sandy, Oregon, has one of the most exceptional collections of rhododendrons in the country with acres of perfectly planted and cared for shrubs.  The nursery collections include the newest hybrids from hybridizers on both the East and West Coast along with one of the largest collections of commercially grown species anywhere.  There is also a delightful display garden with many mature plants under a canopy of native fir trees with an outstanding view of Mount Hood in the background.  This is a most extraordinary location for fabulous rhododendrons.

Volunteers will be on hand all day to answer questions regarding clematis.

Thank You Sheri Todd!

Good Morning Maurice and Mike, Please let me know you read my email.

I am sitting by my large dining room window and looking at Prince Charles in all his glory in bloom and I want to thank the one of you I talked to  two  years ago when you suggested Prince Charles to me to purchase! I consider myself having a good eye to photograph and I really can not get the total splendor in a picture to send you but sending you what I can to show you how beautiful it is here in south Alabama in 89 degree humid weather… Everything is beautiful in May and June here but afterwards the heat and humidity make it not so…

Image

Madam De Viellard has been beautiful and one of my fav..and also Comtesse de Bouchard has done wonderful here…….Prince Charles the color and heaviness of blooms is just awesome..sending you some pictures… waiting on Julia Correvon to bloom today and she has done well here in lower zone 8..with hot summers and humidity… afternoon shade… sun in morning and mid day only for all my clematis…

Image

I have added some lime and fertilizer granular in  late Feb each year and that is all I have done..other than pruning in Feb… I have gone on Daves Garden watchdog and other places all plants site and somewhere have mentioned along in my emails how nice your plants are and large size and good root system and packing to many people to help you sell more…

So thank you for talking to me on the phone and trying to help me when I first asked 2 springs ago..

Color-Flower-Foliage: Planting Now for the Late Summer

~ Jolly Butler

Image

Sunday, May 11, 2014 1:00 PM  at Joy Creek Nursery

By late summer, after the spring excitement and the summer roses, the garden can look a little tired and seem bloomed out. However, there are lots of lovely plants to bridge the gap to fall color. Spring planting plans that integrate late bloomers and colorful foliage can lead to a smooth transition into those final gorgeous summer garden days and nights.

Free and open to the public.

There is a $10.00 class fee for ‘CEH’ Certification.
